On 23 and 24 October, a delegation, PhD researchers, PI’s and support staff, of the ARC CBBC community visited the BASF site in Ludwigshafen. With this visit, BASF and ARC CBBC expressed their mutual interest in continuation of the collaboration within ARC CBBC for driving advancements in sustainable chemistry.

The visit began with a guided tour of BASF’s Visitor Center, followed by a site tour for a firsthand look at the industrial-scale applications of sustainable chemistry.

The second day featured a seminar that began with a presentation by Helmut Winterling, BASF’s President of Group Research. He discussed "Pathways to Sustainability and Circular Economy," setting the stage for further exploration of sustainable practices. Professor Bert Weckhuysen from Utrecht University then shared insights on "Operando Spectroscopy of Catalysts to Make Chemicals from Renewable Resources," sparking engaging discussions on innovative catalyst design.

The seminar also included a talk by Hans Kuipers from Eindhoven University of Technology, about "Pyrolytic Decomposition of Methane to Hydrogen and Functional Solid Carbon – a Multi-scale Approach."

After the first coffee break BASF R&D employees and ARC CBBC PhDs took the stage, showcasing and sharing insights on their research. Finally, the poster session gave way for a fruitful discussion.

We have very much appreciated BASF’s hospitality and the interesting and open discussions.

We thank the organization and look forward to further collaboration.
