New PhD candidates

Alexandra Matei Andries Jensma Jarne de Jong

Alexandra Matei (RUG)

Alexandra is a PhD student in the group of prof. Ben L. Feringa at the University of Groningen. Alexandra completed a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Bryn Mawr College (Pennsylvania, United States) in 2020. She conducted a Master's degree in Chemistry at the University of Groningen, which she completed in October 2022. During her MSc studies, Alexandra conducted her Master thesis project in the Feringa group working on the regioselective preparation of 1,5-enynes from in situ generated propargyllithium species. Then, she conducted a second research project at Symeres B.V. where she worked on the synthesis of unique scaffolds for developing screening libraries. In November 2022, Alexandra returned to the Feringa group to pursue a PhD project which is focused on the anti-Markovnikov functionalization of olefins. She is looking forward to working and collaborating with members and researchers at the ARC CBBC.

Jarne de Jong (RUG)

Jarne de Jong is a Dutch PhD student in the Lerch research group at the University of Groningen. He obtained both his BSc and MSc degrees in Chemistry at the University of Groningen in 2019 and 2021, respectively. During his Bachelor’s thesis, he performed research on the self-assembly of amino acid-based low molecular weight hydrogelators. In his Master’s thesis, he explored opportunities for asymmetric catalysis of such low molecular weight hydrogelators. Both projects were performed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Wesley Browne. Afterwards he performed a research internship at Philips Domestic Appliances Drachten. He started in January 2022 as the first PhD student with Dr. Michael Lerch working on synthetic reaction cascades embedded in soft materials. He enjoys working on soft materials and is looking forward to using them for sustainable applications.

Andries Jensma (RUG)

Andries is a PhD student in the group of prof. dr. Ben L. Feringa at the University of Groningen. He obtained his BSc and MSc at the University of Groningen. During his masters he did his main research in the Feringa group working on the synthesis of polymer building blocks from biomass. Using novel (photo)-oxidation methods and olefin metathesis, furfural was successfully transformed into maleic anhydride and acrylic acid. A second research was conducted at Symeres B.V., synthesizing anthraquinone dyes. After completing his master in 2022, he started his PhD focusing on sustainable waterborne coatings.
