New PhD candidates

Jesse Buckmann en Jelmer Meijer

Jelmer Meijer (RUG)
Jelmer (left photo) obtained his BSc degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering at the University of Groningen. During his bachelor he conducted his research project under the supervision of Ben Feringa, working on controlled odor and drug release of bio-based polymers. After completing his bachelors Jelmer stayed at the same university for his MSc in chemical engineering. During his master another research project was conducted in the group of Ben Feringa, developing a flow‑setup for photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide. An internship was conducted at Symeres B.V., working on the optimization of [2+2] photocycloadditions in flow. In September 2023 Jelmer started his PhD in the group of Ben Feringa, focusing on biologically sourced adaptive coatings.

Jesse Buckmann (UU)
Jesse (right photo) was born in Waalwijk in the south of the Netherlands. He received his BSc and MSc degrees in Chemistry and Physics at Utrecht University. During this time he focused mainly on the synthesis of plasmonic gold nanorods. In August 2023, Jesse started his PhD as an ARC CBBC member in the soft condensed matter and biophysics group. In his free time, he enjoys playing board games, going for a run, or reading a book. Jesse's research will focus on how we can actively switch and control structural colour. This will be done via electrical fields applied over self-assembled particles. Changing the electric field will introduce order in the superstructure, leading to colours through Bragg reflection. The goal is to produce these structural colours with fast switchability.
