A warm welcome to our new PhD candidates! We would like to introduce them to you.
Rik Bennis (University of Amsterdam, left photo) earned his BSc in Chemistry from the University of Applied Sciences in Rotterdam. Throughout his undergraduate studies, he conducted research at TNO (CBRN), focusing on the potential utilization of metal-organic frameworks in absorbing chemical warfare agents. Following his bachelor's, he transitioned to the University of Amsterdam, where he completed his MSc in Molecular Sciences. During his master's project, he designed and developed an iron catalyst capable of catalytically converting azides into the desired N-Heterocyclic product at ambient temperature. After spending a year with TNO's Carbon Capturing Group, he embarked on his PhD research with the HomKat Group at the same university where he completed his master’s degree.
Daan van Eck (Utrecht University) obtained his BSc in Chemistry and MSc in Nanomaterials Science from Utrecht University. For his MSc thesis, he worked on Fe-based catalysts for methane decomposition into hydrogen and carbon nanostructures in the Materials Chemistry and Catalysis (MCC) group at Utrecht University. After a research internship at Bologna University in Italy on photoelectrochemistry, he decided to pursue a PhD position on the same topic as his MSc thesis, again at the MCC group under the supervision of prof. dr. Petra de Jongh. The research focuses on catalyst design based on in situ electron microscopy experiments.
