About myself

Hello, my name is Lukas Wolzak and I grew up in Hoorn in the Netherlands. Besides studying chemistry at the University of Amsterdam I attended the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and specialized in product design. Therefore I enjoy to visit art exhibitions in museums and galleries. In addition, I am an enthusiastic cyclist and plan to climb the Mount Ventoux in France.

As a researcher I am passionate about

Working on complex problems that require both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills. By designing new molecules I want to enable technologies that can contribute to a more sustainable world.

At the moment I work on

Developing new catalysts that are active in the esterification reaction. The goal of my project is to lower the reaction temperature that is required during paint production. With the help of new catalysts we will try to make polyesters, the binding agent in paint, in a more sustainable way. In addition to a reduction in energy consumption a lower reaction temperature allows the use of building blocks derived from biomass.

Within ARC CBBC, I wish to accomplish

With CBBC, I want to make a contribution to more sustainable paints and coatings. In addition, besides introducing new chemo-selectivity I hope to create polyesters that have novel properties such as self-cleaning or improved chemical resistance.
