Dehydrogenation of terpenoids is an attractive transformation as it allows direct access to unsaturated substrates with reagents derived from nature. The most intresting method revolves around catalytic acceptorless dehydrogenation (CAD) where H2 is the sole byproduct, resulting in an overall highly atom efficient process. Recent developments have shown that combining photoredox catalysis with hydrogen atom transfer and transition metal catalysis are promising for this CAD. In this project it will be attempted to expand this to the dehydrogenation of terpenoids. initially a screening of reaction conditions will be caried out to find suitable conditions. When suitable conditions have been found, the mechanism of the transformation will be investiated as a profound understanding is still lacking in this area. mechanistic understanding will then be used to rationally design catalysts with an imporved activity.
