Responsive coatings for on demand delamination

Smart materials are a remarkable class of innovative materials that can dynamically respond to external stimuli, such as temperature, light, pH, or electric fields. Unlike traditional materials, which maintain fixed properties, smart materials can adjust their physical characteristics in a controlled and reversible way. This adaptability makes them incredibly versatile, with applications spanning healthcare, engineering, consumer electronics, and environmental monitoring. By mimicking the responsive behavior of natural systems, smart materials present exciting opportunities to develop more efficient, sustainable, and intelligent technologies. Their unique properties have the potential to revolutionize industries, bringing to life solutions once thought to be purely science fiction. In this project, we aim to explore how to incorporate responsiveness into protective coatings, specifically focusing on controlling the adhesion between the coating and substrate. This could enable the on-demand delamination of coatings using external stimuli, paving the way for more sustainable recycling of coated materials.
